the Cameron Phillips Chronicles
Jul 18 2008, 4:50 PM EDT
I was wondering why 90% of the posts in this forum are about Cameron, or to put it differently: why viewers are so fascinated by her. Do you think this was planned by the producers? If not, then why did it happen? Do you think they have tried to correct this in season 2?

If this wasn't planned and it "just happened", do you think they will succeed in correcting this lack of balance?

If it had not been Summer Glau, who do you think would have been ideal to play this role, and do you think it would have had the same effect?

I am sincere in my questions... I would love to know what do you think.

I think because she's a girl teminator who's trying to figure things out for herself, like lots of girls the same age as she appears to be so the audience is more sympathetic to her. If it was an "Arnie-type" terminator the show wouldn't be as interesting. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Cameron would be my favourite character as I like the idea of a machine struggling to become human. I liked Summer in firefly as well which is what made me watch Terminator. Do you find this valuable?

I found T3 so horrible i didn't even think to include it ^_^

Wait has anyone else realised that Summer plays really screwed up characters? lets see. River Tam: Psychotic, mind experimented, emotional wreck. Cameron: Robot struggling with humans and emotions. Tess Deorner (sp?) A shizophrenic (sp?) returnee.

Have you ever heard of an actor stealing the show? Like Alan Alda stealing M*A*S*H from Wayne Rogers, Alyson Hannigan stealing American Pie, etc. Well, here we have Summer Glau. If it was planned, I don't know. But I somehow doubt it, considering the title is "Sarah Connor Chronicles".

Why it happened... One reason should be obvious - Summer is hot. Reasons two and three are what alienrobot and Jalex002 said. The "machine learning to become human" is what fascinates me the most. Then there's Summer's portrayal of Cameron - the delivery of her lines, the tone of her voice, the facial expressions... it's simply amazing.

The only other actress I know that could pull off Cameron like that is Amy Acker. Amy and Summer are similar in more than one way - both are Texan, both have a history of ballet, both can do the instant blank stare->full emotion switch (Amy did it as Fred/Ilyria on Angel). They even look somewhat similar. Oh and both have a Saturn Award. The only problem for Amy, she is probably too old to play a high school teenager. I can't say any other names, because quite honestly I can't picture Cameron being played by anyone else but Summer.

As for "correcting" this in Season 2... From the looks of Season 2 Promos and the producers talking about "triangles", the answer seems to be 'no'.

Well, she played a normal character on "The Unit". But yeah, the chance that she'll be forever typecast as a freaky sci-fi girl is very high.

In response to a thread started by "Veran" called "Cameron's death" I stated that Cameron can take a leading and important role in the future world, and many fans also believe this.

Cameron is fascinating because she has the potential to be the ultimate creature: a Terminator who is also truly human (in the moral sense, obviously not in the physical sense). This is important because that would make her the synthesis of two natures: 100% human (morally, emotionally, and intellectually) and yet 100% machine (physically). Viewer fascination with this idea, as well as viewer fascination with the idea of a romance between John and Cameron, is likely the driver behind so many "Cameron" threads.

If you go to fanfiction.net or if you read the superb fan fiction posted on this wiki (I'm a big fan of Veran's fan fic, by the way) you will note that the idea of a John/Cameron relationship is very highly popular. Indeed, I've seen stories on fanfiction.net where Cameron becomes John's wife and is known as Cameron Connor. One story even has Cameron living well into the 25th century and, as a professor of history, discussing the legacy of her long-dead husband General John Connor!

All in all, her potential to have two natures, humanity and machinery, is her most fascinating aspect.

I agree with all above.

Cameron is an interesting character, she's the first female terminator assigned to protect John, so that makes her unique. And shes the first good female terminator. And as others have said, its very interesting to watch Summer play Cameron.....she can be terminator-like in one scene while very childlike and cute in another scene.

And plus Summer is very beautiful :) She's awesome

I don't see why the would try and "fix" this as to many its one of the best aspects of the show. If they removed something that could easily help with ratings I would be very surprised. Do you find this valuable?

I don't think they'll try and fix it. They didn't focus on Cameron in season 1, she's just a popular character and that is always a good thing. So, there really isn't anything to "fix." Nothing can be wrong with a popular character. As to the reasons why she's popular...

It's a chick that plays the most bad ass of the bad asses. Most of the guys drool over her and she's younger. Lena is pretty hot too but she is in her 30s while Summer does look in her late teens and her own age. Also, just her character alone is interesting. As some have said, her character development is interesting and something we don't normally see on TV. THose two things right there seal the deal.

Was this their plan? I think it was their hope. I truly think they were hoping that people would take to Cameron and really be interested her. And they have. And like I said, there's nothing to fix because they don't actually FOCUS on her, she is a supporting character and she should stay that way because if we see TOO much of her, she won't be as mysterious and interesting. So, they should keep it as it is.

Didn't realise until now that Summer always plays comparatively young roles as well. River Tam is 17 while Cameron is meant to look around 16 as well. Of course you can tell in the school scenes that her and Thomas are older seen their taller than everyone else but most the time she pulls it of pretty well. Do you find this valuable?

I don't think height really has anything to do with age...

I'd divide Cameron's fans into three categories:

1. Those who see her as a sex symbol.
Cameron's much more appealing than a wall.

2. Those who see her as a role model.
Cameron's a strong independent girl who can beat up terminators twice her size.

3. Those who see her as an alter ego.
Cameron's like a walking talking mirror to socially awkward misfits.

As a socially awkward misfit, I'm in the third category. I have misunderstandings like the school bathroom scene all the time in real life, and just today I had a shotgun/9-mil moment. If only Cameron were real, we could be the best of friends.

I believe it’s because she is the big mystery character wise of the show. We have seen Sarah’s character develop over two movies so we all know what to expect from her, same with John, his character was established in T2 and the mythology already tells us how he will end up.
Cameron is new, we don’t know what type of Terminator she really is. We know she’s different but not how different, and we don’t know what the future holds for her.
So that’s why everyone is focusing on her……………or…… I might be wrong and its because she’s pretty!

I totally agree with the "fascination with the robot becoming human" arguement. Although my fascination with John's development is a close second, Camerons' evolution from unfeeling machine to curious almost-human is an intriguing and unbelievably well acted transition by the great Summer Glau.

I also noticed she plays quite young girls too, expecially in the Initiation of Sarah. LOVE that movie to death, and only a few months ago realized Summer was in it. In that movie she was just...well, so normal, and in Firefly and T:SCC she's so, abnormal that i guess I forgot she was in it, lol. But hta's the mark of a true actor. they melt into their roles with such ease it's amazing.

I agree with #2, it's cool seeing someone who looks "weak" kicking so much ass.
