Why Add Riley to the Cast?
Jul 15 2008, 3:44 PM EDT Okay, so here it is — the presence of John Connor’s new love interest in Leven Rambin, who plays a girl name Riley Apparently that wasn’t something the producers of the show came up with; instead, it was dictated to them by the suits at FOX. Yup, you heard that right — John is getting a human girlfriend in TSCC, and it’s because FOX wanted him to have one. I guess it was too much that FOX didn’t try to turn the show into some 90210 wannabe, but whatever, FOX, you’ve done so well with genre shows so far, right? You MUST know what you’re doing. (ahem). Riley will not be privy to John’s special burden. John’s new human girl, Riley was named after FOX chief Kevin Reilly, apparently. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I just hope they don't make this show all lovey dovey like Warner Bros did with Smallville. (Why can't Lana just DIE already. It's so annoying.) All I say is that FOX better be carefull. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 15 2008, 3:51 PM EDT "John’s new human girl, Riley was named after FOX chief Kevin Reilly, apparently."Somehow I'm picturing a kind of insufferable, John Cleese like executive casually demanding that a new character WILL be named after himself :-) (OK, I'm sure Kevin Reilly is not at all like that) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Why Add Riley to the Cast?
Jul 15 2008, 4:05 PM EDT Hmm, the impression I got from what I read is that Josh had plans to add someone "normal" (not a time traveler or robot) all along. That this someone be a girl was the only thing Fox requested. So this wasn't something that was entirely forced upon the TSCC writers as you seem to imply. Again, that's my impression. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Why Add Riley to the Cast?
Jul 15 2008, 4:06 PM EDT Interesting that Buffy had a bf named Riley for a season. Wasn't that a fox show too? I'm glad John will be with a real woman. Jonesing after a metal robot was a little freaky for me. Besides John needs to enjoy life while the world is still normal. It's sort of difficult to have fun in a world where most of mankind is dead and all the cities are destroyed. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Remember the original name was to be "Becky" but Fox changed that. I didn't mean to imply that Fox forced a "Riley" character, but rather that Fox forced it be a love interest, which was not envisioned the TSCC producers. Do you find this valuable? |

Jul 15 2008, 4:16 PM EDT "Wasn't that a fox show too?"Buffy was the other way around - a Fox show that aired on WB (whereas here we have a WB show that airs on Fox). As for this whole thing, John Wirth was talking about "triangles". I'm guessing we might see some "jealousy" from Cameron, or at least Cameron being overly protective of John with regards to Riley. Could be interesting. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

So whatever tension that's there it's all how John reacts to her. Do you find this valuable? |

We can't be the only ones who have noticed the tension between John and metal-maid Cameron (Summer Glau). Wirth teased: "Every interesting relationship I've been in has been a triangle." Jul 15 2008, 4:26 PM EDT "But why did they not continue with Cheri Westin then?"Maybe it would evolve into a kinda Romeo/Juliet relationship, with a possible very strict father or something, but what I am trying to say is, there was allready a girl that could fill this place, and anyway hopes this Reily girl will befriend Cammy girl, I think she needs it, her first possible friend commited suicide 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Remember the original name was to be "Becky" but Fox changed that.I highly doubt Fox wanted her named after their own execs or really that this Riley person wanted the dubious honor of having a girl named after him. Actually it sounds more like the writers said, "Hey, your idea, we'll name her after you." 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 15 2008, 5:03 PM EDT "But why did they not continue with Cheri Westin then?"Cheri showed no interest in John and was perceived by viewers as boring and/or annoying. I could say I belong to those people. I think someone with active interest in John is a lot more interesting than Cheri. Do you find this valuable? |

Jul 15 2008, 5:42 PM EDT Perhaps they knew that the John/Cameron angle wouldnt be accepted by everyone and didnt want the show to sink because of it. There are still a lot of fans who dont want a John/Cameron relationship........and indeed, it is still a bit odd to me, even though ive been open to it. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I hope they don't drop her entirely, I would like to atleast know a little bit more about her... why her father is overly protective and such. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Why Add Riley to the Cast?
Jul 15 2008, 6:40 PM EDT I can't recall exactly, but wasn't there some interview w/Josh Friedman talking about when the Riley character would first appear? I remember it might have been as soon as episode 2. But if she appears that soon, then that means they've probably got the Cameron gone bad issue resolved by episode 1, since it's unlikely John would be heading back to school if they hadn't taken care of that. Jul 15 2008, 6:50 PM EDT "But will she be privy to his "Special Purpose?" Okay, I think the biggest demographic missing from the show was women. I personally don't know any who were watching it on a regular basis (and that's from an ad hoc tally from work). The show definately lacked in romance - which the first movie certainly did not. It probably sucks getting handed a mandatory character assignment, but I bet the writers can handle it. Besides, a robot /human love triangle sounds kinda cool. (Special Purpose is from "The Jerk" ) Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Why Add Riley to the Cast?
Jul 15 2008, 6:55 PM EDT "Yeah, he said they compromised on episode 2. "Sorry if it's been mentioned already, but is the season premier 1 or 2 hours long? Regardless of that, having Riley appear that early probably means the Cam issue from the premiere is resolved, and that would pretty much go along with what's been said about Season 2: The show is going to be less serialized and episodes more self contained. I'm just assuming that if you've got Riley involved, then you've got John back in school which means things should be hunky dory and they've gotten over Cameron going bad on them.
