Future John's rank in the Resistance

Future John in T2 is shown wearing a uniform with the insignia of a four-star general. That's an error, right? As the leader of the Resistance, surely John is entitled to hold the rank of five-star general. Do you find this valuable?

You are absolutely correct. I would recommend you check the following link since it think it would answer a lot of questions more precisely:

There has not been a five star general in the United States military for near on sixty years, the rank can only be bestowed by Congress usually during a time of war.
It is not clear if any form of national government exits after JD and with a probable diminished military officer Corps would probably serve little purpose

He's probably the ONLY 4 star general... he's the leader, he can do whatever he wants. But he really should have given himself 10 stars. He's a 10 to me! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

How would you get such a ranking in a post-nuclear world with no government and no practising lawyers?

Is John an official or de facto leader? Does he get to the top by protocol/promotion or charisma? Is "the great John Connor" a high-ranking officer or a great speaker/instructor?

I wonder whether they would even bother that much with protocol in a war against the machines.

Also, the Resistance is a guerilla movement and most of the time they probably only fight in small groups. With such small groups, would they really need that many people above the rank of maybe Captain or Major? I used to think Perry (mentioned in T1) was a colonel or major but I think I found on Wikia that he was actually only a sergeant! High-ranking officers would only be needed for large operations so I have to assume they fight in very small groups. It would not be a conventional command structure. It makes me wonder if John is really called "the general" or if they just call him "the leader." Maybe they just call him Connor without a title.

Asking if John Connor had a ranking is like asking if William Wallace or Joan of Arc had rankings. At a time when your country has been taken over and you are fighting for freedom I wonder why it would be so important for the top-person to have a ranking.

Isn't Derek a Lt? I thought he was. And if he's a lieutenant and one of John's best soldiers then I'd say Intrepid is on the mark there that there aren't many high ranking officers out there in the Resistance. A lieutenant is pretty low in on the totem poll of officers. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I’m currently writing a story that involves a set piece battle in the future ( whether I post it or not depends if I think it’s any good) anyway it got me thinking about what the structure of Johns command would be like.
Rank isn’t just to say who’s top dog, it designates what unit types/numbers you command. For example a lieutenant commands a platoon of approximately 11-44 soldiers give or take and a captain commands 2 platoons or more called a company and so forth.
Perry is a one star General (Brigadier General) so he is either a deputy commander to commanding General of a division or is the commander of a brigade size unit, 3000-5000 strong
John is a four star General (General) and can command anything from 50000-1000000 soldiers, that is, multiple divisions (Corps) or Army (Corps or multiple Corps)
I some how doubt that John has that many troops under his command so I think his command structure while following general military principles is probably akin more to the French resistance of WW2 with “cells” rather than the regular army chain of command. Each “cell” would be independent and wouldn’t know the location of other “cells”, they would have a set zone of operation and wouldn’t be any larger than Company size as larger formations would find it harder to avoid detection.
A cell could be commanded by any rank from lieutenant to colonel regardless of actual unit size. It would be conceivable that officers of varying rank survived JD but lack the troop numbers to justify that rank so I envisioned a divvying up process of the available officers to the various “cells”
