Is Skynet here in the World today? Is "Terminator" Fiction?
Apr 6 2008, 2:07 PM EDT I was reading an article online today that basically says that the World Wide Web is to be replaced by a new Internet called "The Grid". It's 10,000 times faster than any high speed internet available today (Read at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/06/ninternet106.xml). With Robotics coming online in Asia and "The Grid" in Europe - is Cameron's Sci-Fi tomorrows reality? I love this show and loved the movies - but were is the line? Your opinions? 11 out of 18 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 6 2008, 3:03 PM EDT "I love this show and loved the movies - but were is the line? Not to sound too weird, but I don't think we'll find the line until we find out how far we can adapt. I live in an area that's madly conservative in it's rhetoric, insanely rigid it its professed beliefs and completely incapable of responding to the reality of the changes, like the ones you describe. In my observation, the less adaptable we are the less likely we are to really know where to draw the line, and for a significant number of us the realities of science, like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, are going to be advanced far beyond our grasp when, or if, we ever look up from controlling ideological issues that, to me, are nothing more than petty bickering. 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Apr 7 2008, 6:50 PM EDT I wouldn't be worried about the actual "Grid" but more of the more advanced AI's that will be developed later. Computers are doing some really amazing stuff right now and a lot of technology is not on the market yet that is being used by major players such as NASA, and Military applications. Check out .bostondynamics.com/ and watch what some of those robots are already doing. If you ever watch the TV show future weapons you get to see some pretty high speed stuff. The US Army has a equipment carrier in development that is capable of plotting and following it's own route, and consciously overcome any obstacle or barrier that gets into its way with out the help of humans. The machine litteraly thinks for itself and finds a solution to the problem. The more astonishing thing to that is we are seeing something that has been declassified, just imagine the things in development that are still classified and doing far greater problem solving. Internet connection will truly be a large player in the world, but the machines and computers running it are fare scarier. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

It is designed to allow scheduled, temporary routing between points to aid in sharing data streams like those generated by the LHC and streaming astrological date from observatories. You can participate in the analyzing of the LHC data by getting the BOINC software at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and then registering with the LHC project at http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/ . 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Apr 8 2008, 5:52 PM EDT Also, the government already has some pretty sophisticated computer systems....its certainly possible that "a" Skynet could become reality....especially coming from the defense department. But as far as it becoming "self aware", I think thats a long way to go...if ever 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If we can't understand how the brain COMPLETELY works. We will never be able to make a human computer. All the grid is a bunch of preprogramed number 00000000000011101111011011011111. That is exactly what it is. That's exactly why the world creates sci-fi. Because if anything was possible than I sure this show wouldn't be around. 2 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 8 2008, 8:59 PM EDT "Good points KalebExactly. I see terrorist useing the internet as a big virus more than the Computer itself becomeing the terrorist. Not say in any way that I would want that to happen though. The Computer allways has to be controled by some type of user interface. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 8 2008, 10:41 PM EDT "Also, the government already has some pretty sophisticated computer systems....its certainly possible that "a" Skynet could become reality....especially coming from the defense department.Well lets put it this way. ANything you've read about when it comes to the governments tech, is about 10 years behind where they really are. THey don't just publicize they're latest and greatest. What you see today is the old stuff. The supposed "UFO"s that get seen at a distance over experimental bases are just the stuff they'll reveal as the "new" some years from now. And Terminators are not that unrealistic. I can take a 10 second sample of you talking, run it through on of my sound programs, and suddenly there you'd be, talking away.... only it isn't you, its me and my computer is amking it sound like you. And as for getting a robot to move like a human... easy. In fact they already have them. THey just need the synthetic skin, hair, eyes, and an apropriate AI system!! 3 out of 3 found this valuable. RE: Is Skynet here in the World today? Is "Terminator" Fiction?
Apr 9 2008, 12:14 AM EDT AI and power storage/power plant would probably be the biggest hurdles. I don't think we've gotten far enough with programming capabilities for anyone to field a weapon that can completely get along on its own ie evaluating and reacting to a fluid combat situation on the fly. They're definately getting closer with "brilliant" weapons that are able to seek out their own targets etc, but that's still not the same as self-deploying, self-directing weapon system. Ironically, I did see a news article awhile back about the UK MOD using their satcom system to possibly direct UAV's. The really oddball part the satcom system is named Skynet. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I suppose like Cameron said about the LA Traffic Network that they laid the virus in - this "Grid" could be "it's nervous system". If all the computers in the world today were linked together like a super computer through a computer like "The Turk" - the "Grid" as the nervous system..never mind. I'm thinking to much (LOL) :-) 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 9 2008, 10:29 AM EDT The only way computer will kill humans is if they are programmed too or if there is an error in their programming which allows them to do so unless they become sentient or self-aware like the replicators in Stargate or like Skynet in Terminator. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Is that black and white photo someone famous or otherwise noteworthy from the terminator production team? Another poster, LiquidMetal, has an encyclopic knowledge of all things terminator-related, but I'm nowhere in that league. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
