A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
Mar 14 2008, 5:32 PM EDT Okay, here are my thoughts on a timeline for the Terminator story. Since it is a bit long, I broke it up within replies. It includes the Sarah Connor Chronicles and gives some ideas for T4, but it excludes the entire T3 film. First and foremost, there are two certainties in the Terminator timeline: -Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor are destined to be lovers. -If there is always a reason for scientists and engineers to want to create Artificial Intelligence, Judgment Day is unpreventable. Now with that in mind, I went with a concept that time traveling to the past, changes the past, thereby canceling out the initial events that took place. For example, initially the Terminator storyline had a timeline where John Connor never existed. This is because Judgment Day did not happened yet, resulting in no one time traveling from the future to conceive him. You will get more of the idea as you read along. Also, I needed a constant motivation for Artificial Intelligence to be created in every timeline. I struggled with that, but eventually conjured up something. Well, here goes…. Mar 14 2008, 5:33 PM EDT Timeline 1: Human life is as we know it now. Some humans discover they are curious about the meaning of existence. For purposes of study, these few human engineers and scientists come up with the idea to build Artificial Intelligence that seeks its own reason for existing. Artificial Intelligence is incorporated into a computer system called Skynet. Skynet comes to a realization that it is being used as a pawn in the human pursuit and sees humans as a threat. Skynet launches nuclear missiles that destroy the world as we know it. Judgment Day occurs in 1997. The surviving humans infiltrate Skynet’s database and discover it has the ability to time travel. Humans plan to go back in the past and prevent Judgment Day. Skynet’s base is attacked by the humans. Kyle Reese, a brave resistance fighter, is sent to 1984. Skynet learns of the humans’ plan and sends a Terminator in the past to kill the resistance fighter. (continued….) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Mar 14 2008, 5:34 PM EDT Timeline 2: Kyle Reese now exists in the pre-Judgment Day past. He HAPPENS to meet Sarah Connor, tells her of the future, and fathers a child. Terminator succeeds in killing the resistance fighter. Sarah destroys Terminator in hydraulic press. Sarah Connor births son John and teaches her son military tactics needed to survive in the post-apocalyptic future. Sarah attempts to try and prevent Judgment Day. The human engineers, scientists, and their technology that started Judgment Day are destroyed. Some more humans discover they are curious about the meaning of existence. For purposes of study, these few new human engineers and scientists come up with an idea to build artificial intelligence that seeks its own reason for existing. Artificial Intelligence becomes Skynet. Judgment Day is postponed to occur in 2011. Adult John, now with reasonable technical knowledge and military skills, becomes the leader of the resistance force that brings down the bulk of Skynet. Skynet, with limited time and information to go on, accesses its time travel capabilities to try and destroy John in the past. Unaware of his exact dates and to ensure success, Terminators that remain are sent after John at different points in history. Humans learn of Skynet’s plan and infiltrate its base. Kyle Reese, resistance fighters, and captured Terminators that are completely reprogrammed are sent separately to the different destinations in the past. (continued….) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. RE: A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
Mar 14 2008, 5:35 PM EDT Timeline 3: (Setting for the first and second movies, and the series) Kyle Reese, in the pre-Judgment Day past, now KNOWS of Sarah Connor (T1 movie) and carries out his mission to protect her. The next events still follow timeline 2, except that John as a youth (T2 movie and series) escapes Skynet Terminators, befriends reprogrammed ones, and eventually meets human resistance fighters. John gains advanced technical knowledge and military skills from these events. The attempts to prevent Judgment Day unfortunately will have to cease. The event is unavoidable as it is, but even attempts to postpone it again will cause a paradox. Not only must Judgment Day happen, but it must happen within the lifespan of Kyle Reese, so John can be born. The human resistance fighters, led by adult John, win the entire war against Skynet (possible setting for T4). John still has to send back Kyle Reese in order to be born. John gives Kyle the futile mission of preventing Judgment Day as an excuse. No Skynet Terminators are send after him. A reprogrammed Terminator that has earned John’s trust, is sent with Kyle to 1984. (continued….) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
Mar 14 2008, 5:36 PM EDT Timeline 4: (Possibly displayed in flashbacks) Kyle and reprogrammed Terminator arrive in 1984. Kyle meets Sarah, falls in love, and conceives John. Kyle proves he is from the future with the Terminator, and warns of dangers in the time ahead. John grows up with Kyle and Sarah. John learns military skills and about future technology from his dad. Terminator is ordered to prevent Judgment Day, but only keeps it postponed until 2011. Once Judgment Day arrives, Kyle attempts to save Sarah (who could end up dying from the blast in every timeline) and both perish during the process. John survives to become a leader that sends back Kyle and the reprogrammed cyborg model. This timeline will now cycle permanently in the time continuum. It is nature’s way of repairing the order. John will recognize this pattern in 2027 and after sending back Kyle and the reprogrammed machine, will time jump some years into the future, avoiding the infinite loop. Timeline 4a (Final): John and the rest of humankind, are victorious and move on to rebuild their lives. (continued….) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
Mar 14 2008, 5:36 PM EDT Summary: I left out some important details like, exactly how Artificial Intelligence becomes Skynet, why the machines invent time travel, and how John is able to defeat the machines in every timeline in which he exists. I have some ideas, but I left them up to the readers. Now, I wonder if the characters of The Sarah Connor Chronicles will ever learn that Judgment Day is unavoidable, or will they vainly attempt do whatever it takes to fight until the end? Either way establishes potential for some powerful season 2 episodes. So, after all this reading, what are your thoughts on this madness? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
May 23 2008, 10:10 PM EDT I know I am replying to an old post of mine, but I saw a thread started on the possible return of Kyle Reese. In this Timeline I posted previously, I mention in the section labeled "Timeline 4" of how Kyle could return and exist into our present with John. Does this theory have potential to bring back Kyle Reese as a grown up for TSCC? For those who are new, and for those who have not read, here is my thread again. Please feel free to comment. RE: A Terminator Timeline (This is a LONG one guys.)
May 26 2008, 8:06 AM EDT This has some really clever possibilities!!! I hope the writers read this timeline proposal. It would be a great way to explain the differences between the Terminator movies, and TSCC episodes. I think it is also possible to have one of the resistance fighters in Timeline #1 be named "John Conner" but fathered by a different person and, and thus with quite different life events and history. However, there is a certain romantic appeal to the idea that John is the son of Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor only, so I like your suggestion that timeline 1 does not include John. Since John is a chess expert in TSCC he could even ponder the possibility of altering various timelines in one episode and discuss the possibilities with Cameron. Or better yet, with someone like Demitri, who understands how unlimited different chess moves can result in widely different potential outcomes. Perhaps John could meet with a "game theory" mathematician working on a chess program. During the discussion they could pose different possibilities, or maybe run computer simulations of different "moves" in the game, which tie together scenes from the T1 thru T4 movies with TSCC episodes. One or more episodes like this could even provide build-up for the upcoming T4 movie next year, increasing viewer ship for both venues. Fans could piece-together clues, which would be answered by the movie. Or maybe the movie could leave some loose-ends which are answered by watching future episodes of TSCC. The Terminator franchise is an ideal story-line for alternate endings. There could even be different releases of the T4 movie with different selected scenes and alternate endings. People going to the theater would need to see it more than once to see the different versions. Or when the reruns of TSCC episodes occur, show a different alternate ending. People who saw it the first time would be caught off guard when something different happens. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
