BIG opening bookend song for Season 2?? Would this work for you?
Mar 7 2008, 9:57 AM EST
Hi Josh!

I'm trying to keep the positive vibe going and assume that there WILL BE a second season (and many more to come!).

As as I was contemplating the use of the subtle religious Revelation subtext in the great and somber Johnny Cash song "The Man Comes Around" for the closing act of Season One's cliffhanger, I remembered back to the wonderful Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds acoustic concert at Radio City Music Hall. Great Blu-ray disc, by the way!

One song in particular stuck out: "Eh Hee." Web link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlI8YsRthG4 You'd have to censor one word for the TV show, obviously, but you could leave it uncensored on the home video version.

Not a particularly subtle song, I know, and quite the opposite of the song above, but I was considering the, in a way, sad note you left the closing episode on and how it bummed out a lot of the fans, especially considering the fact that Season 2 is up in the air (at the moment). With a Season 2 opener after all the hair pulling and whatnot... I would think that you'd want a "we're back, baby... and with a vengence" sort of feeling.

John, Cameron, Sarah, Derek, Agent Ellison, etc. in the story (and the actors, producers and writers and fans in the real world): I'm gonna knock, the, Devil, to his, knees (the bad Russian guys who tried to take out Cameron, Cromartie, Skynet, and in a way those who didn't have faith in bringing this excellent show back)! Basically, we're all more determined than ever and we're mad as hell. We're going to change the world... and take back the future.

Any opinions? Stand up and cheer for Season 2!!

For those of you who may not have high spead internet and can't listen to the Dave Matthews song "Eh Hee" that I referenced above here are some key lyrics to consider...

"Praise God, who has many names, but the devil has many more... and with the love that my mother gave me I'm gonna knock the devil to the floor. I'm gonna drop... the... devil... to his knees."

"Be wary of those who believe in a neat little world 'cause it's just f---king crazy. You know that it is."

"Walking along in this haze of confusion sometimes I can laugh, but sometimes it takes all of my strength just to find the reason to take the next step. But I will. I will 'til I do."

"Somebody's gonna change the world."

"Strange evolution when people have come to believe that we are its greatest conclusion. Where wherein we are just a collection of cells, overrating themselves. Hello God, I'm avoiding the truth."

Plus the allusion to native, primal rhythm and song (with the "eh hee" parts). And the use of family... mothers, sisters, brothers., etc.

Actually, with these lyrics it fits quite well into the Terminator story and is multilayered... and it's a rockin' good song too.

I wonder if Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds would be willing to do acoustic studio versions of this song plus the song "Crush" (a great Cameron and John love song, to me anyway) and a few other of Dave's greats that might be worthy of including on the show from time to time.

Just a thought. =)

He cannot be stopped! =)

Not to exclude Cameron's side of things in a great romance with John, here is Sarah McLachlan's acoustic version of "Take Your Breath Away" (a hidden track at the end of the album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy):

(don't mind the visuals of this clip I found... just listen to the music and the lyrics as if filtered through a love struck cyborg learning powerful and mysterious emotions)

It's achingly sad, haunting, and beautiful IMHO. I get a little misty eyed whenever I hear it.

Okay, now I'm done.

Here's another very fitting and moving John and Cameron love ballad that I just tripped across. It fits the multiple facets that make up Cameron and how it would take so much more love and effort than normal to get past the differences between a human and sentient machine ,and break through the termoil to touch her soul. John is such a man to do it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1onkOGT8LU (Live version)

"Like A Hurricane" from Neil Young on his album Decade

Once I thought I saw you
in a crowded hazy bar,
Dancing on the light
from star to star.
Far across the moonbeams
I know that's who you are,
I saw your brown eyes
turning once... to fire.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

I am just a dreamer,
but you are just a dream,
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

You are just a dreamer,
and I am just a dream.
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

I could envision this as a recurring theme throughout Terminator since a religious undertone to the show has already been established. It might also be a touching and emotionally charged bookend to the Johnny Cash song when Cameron comes back in Season 2 depending on how you write it. It would also be a fitting for if and when Cameron has an epiphany or awakening of her "soul." How can you truly love someone and care about them and others without first learning grace and heart (and this song doesn't even have to mean she's found "God" in the literal sense... it's really a catch-all song, especially when only instrumental)?

I absolutely love versions of this classic hymn with bagpipes and full, swelling, and majestic orchestra... (like the new version with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guard) even a bit of sweet and serene singing punctuating some of the main lyrics like the first and last lines of the song.

"Amazing Grace"

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see."

It really speaks for itself.

Being a Johnny Cash fan, I think you may already know that Johnny Cash recorded a good version of Amazing Grace and...

"God's Gonna Cut You Down"... another terrific Johnny Cash opener for Season 2.

Sorry to keep bringing this up. I thought that for those people not familiar with Johnny's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" that they could take a listen and hear for themselves what I'm talking about.

Did I ever mention that I'm a big Johnny Cash admirer myself? Gotta love the Cash man!!!

If some of you have never seen "Walk the Line" with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon you should! Joaquin does a wonderously spot-on impersonation of Johnny's signature singing style.

Give it up for the man in black!

I did find a link to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards version of Amazing Grace.

http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/window/media/page/listen/0,,4570958,00.html

I could definitely hear in my mind a very tender and sweet female vocalist singing the opening to this hymn and then having the last line float away into the ether and then have the orchestra (and perhaps pipes in the background too) swell into a beautiful instrumental version and then decrescendo and then have the vocalist come back for the final refrain.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see..."

I get goosebumps just thinking about it. This version and the Johnny Cash version can definitely compliment each other depending on who or what the song is about.

Any thoughts?

bah... forget peotic lyrics. The only way to start the second season would be to have Cameron stepping out of the burning Jeep looking really pissed off, and lots of damaged tissue, and smoking clothes. Que the song "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by The Scorpions as she walks into the house, grabs a gun and chases down the Sarkissian guy. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

That's definitely one way to do it, but I think you need to keep with the same tenor established with the final episode. It WAS poetic, it WAS religious, it WAS emotional.

I'd love a big, bad, loud opener too, but after a little bit, I reconsidered. I think a GREAT song rather than a crowd pleaser would elevate the show even more. It already went out on a stylistic high note in Season 1. Bring it back at the same high quality level.

Amazing Grace, God's Gonna Cut You Down, and the like are classics.

Having Johnny Cash, again, with a religious song of a different vibe and much more uplifting would be awesome in my humble opinion. G.G.C.Y.D. also has that driving beat (even a march tempo) that you can cut the shots too as well, if that song fits okay. Personally, I think it does.

No... it HAS to be a heavy metal song. She is going to be PISSED when she crawls out of the wreckage. Plus, the other characters will have a "let's find the bastard and kick his ass!" demeanor, and the season premiere will need a good action sequence to kick it off. Nothing conveys anger and rage like a good metal song. If you want to be artsy, then use something like "Them Bones" from Alice in Chains. The song is about the inevitability of death, which plays into the theme of an inevitable "Judgment Day". Do you find this valuable?

Not to argue with you, but I do like my rock as much as the next guy. I like all kinds of music. Doesn't matter what it is. Classical, especially.

However, did you actually listen to the Johnny Cash song I linked to? Just highlight and copy 'n' paste the web link into your browser. It's got that kind of "I'm coming for you with a vengence" vibe, but links itself to "The Man Comes Around" from the conclusion to Season 1. Almost like a companion piece.

Listen carefully, and tell me what you think.

I listened to it. The tone would be OK, but it has been done already. I understand what you're saying about it being a pseudo bookend, but I think it would just come off as repetitive since it is essentially the very next episode.
Season two needs to start off with a bang. Something to hook viewer, and kick the fans right in the ass with some decent action. If there is a musical overlay, it needs to be something powerful, something fast paced, and something mean sounding.

While I don't exactly agree with the music choice, I do see your point.

It's possible that they could have that Johnny Cash song come in later on in the episode and cut it to our favorite "Connor Clan" of Cameron, John, Sarah, Derek, Agent Ellison, Charlie, etc. getting some pay back. I really like the lyrics and the driving march of "God's Gonna Cut You Down."

It might work better that way if the opening of Terminator only has a short burst of "action oriented" rock music if they start things off with a bang. Maybe a quick refrain of "Bad to the Bone" for Cameron's triumphant return.

I just have no idea what they have in store for us (action wise, dramatic wise, tone wise, etc.) in the first episode, so I find myself grasping at straws.

Hopefully, some of our suggestions will help.
