  • Thread Kyle Reese Link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Reese

A good link and summary of Michael Biehn's role. I had hoped to upload the accompanying photo into this discussion, but don't think it's allowed in the text area. So thank you, LoveReese2029, for yours.

  • Thread RE: Kyle Reese -- How old is he now? Of course after I loaded up the wikipedia page it said that he was born in 07 or 08 (character was 22 in Terminator).
In addition to that I found other information dealing with the characters status in the series at the page.
As to source myself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Reese I really should have waited a few minutes and made this one post...

  • Thread skynet logic i was just thinking about programming and recursion (if a function can't answer your question it calls itself and passes a subset of the information it's been working on to a copy of itself, which then passes to a smaller subset of that information to another copy of it self, repeating until the tiniest part of the question can be answered and that passed back answering the previous question until you finally get back an answer to the original question) {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursion} don't worry if that doesn't make sense.

the point being if i was thinking like a computer, and i couldn't kill john connor,i would try to kill his mother before he was born,if i couldn't do that i would go after Sarah's mother before she was born,if that failed i would go after sarah's grandmother before her mother was born, etc eventually you would kill off one of sarah's ancestors and thus prevent john from existing

most of that information (who her parents were) would be publicly available in census records

if sarah was say 35 in 1999 and john was 16
sarah had john in 1983 when she was 19
sarah would be born in 1964 and her mother would be 20's or 30s
her mother would be born in the 1930s
her grandmother would be born in the 1900's

the point is the farther back you go the easier it would be for a terminator to kill someone, since the previous generation would be least expecting a robot come assassinate them,or push them in front of a train or a stagecoach or collapse a coalmine on them..

  • Thread RE: Time travel
"based on what i have read on this site and from what i have read in books past, all forms of time travel are interesting. But the way they do it in terminator makes the most logical sense. consider this. time is not like anything we know of. we can only measure it going forward, thus we know of only what HAS happened in the past. if skynet sent a terminator into the past, that would establish a whole new variation of time from that point on. when a resistance fighter gets sent back, it alters it again. its wierd in a way. perhaps i am clouded on the subject. would somebody like to clear it up for me if they can. it would be appreciative."
    1) Time travel in sci fi is always confusing
    2) There are MANY theories on time travel. The time line you are talking about is single dimensional, grandfather theory on the same time line. But there are many others. This will help you get started in understanding how deeply you (me too) dont understand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel there are good links at the bottom and good discussion on the topic too.
    3) My guess is that if you wanted it more accuratly to fit into one of the accepted theories on time travel the show wouldnt be enjoyed by a "mainstream" audience. And it would be enjoyed by a more "hardcore/science" audience which could KILL ratings :)
    4) If I had to pin it then I would say its closest fit would be a multi-dimensional universe. Where going back in time only creates a new universe with a different future but the previous one still exists in an other dimension. But this theory kills the whole point of time travel. After all you want your future to be different not someone elses.

  • Thread RE: Please watch the science I posted earlier about the genetics of blood type. I am a Ph.D. student in biological anthropology.

I just want to clear something up about skin color. The discussion has been as though skin color is trait controlled by a single gene . Skin color is actually polygenetic trait, that is a trait controlled by multiple genes. With polygenetic traits, it is not as easy to talk about inheritance as there are many genes involved. Its not the same as talking about a trait controlled by a single gene, like the ABO blood group -which is a very good example of Mendelian inheritance.

Here is a link to wikipedia that may help:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygenic_inheritance

Mutations of the sort needed to make John's blood type from an "O" phenotype mother are rare, and I think the simpler explanation here is that it was a mistake on the writers part. (for instance, why did Charlie show no surprise at John's blood type, given Sarah's O phenotype).

As I said before, I think for the sake of plot, I am willing to overlook it, I just wish they weren't that careless about it.

  • Thread RE: Besides Arnold, who would have made a good Terminator?
"Ok What lance did really happened but if u say they were ridiculous enough to "seriously" offer O.J. the role but I have'nt ever heard that anywhere and neither has anyone I know than I beleive u. "
Cameron originally envisioned the Terminator as a small and unremarkable man (later using this visions for the T-1000 in T2), giving it the ability to blend in more easily. As a result, his first choice for the part was Lance Henriksen (an unknown at the time). O.J. Simpson was on the shortlist, but Cameron did not think that "such a nice guy could be a ruthless killer". Michael Biehn was also on the shortlist for the Terminator, and not the hero Kyle Reese.

Regarding Henriksen, Cameron went so far as to paint a picture of the Terminator using Henriksen's face, and he had the actor dress-up as the character and attend an Orion Pictures production meeting in character.

According to him and co-writer William Wisher, Schwarzenegger was offered the role of the human soldier Reese. However, Cameron and Wisher realized that Arnold would make the perfect Terminator, thus transitioning the Terminator from a small and unremarkable "man" to a large and muscular "man".

  • Thread RE: Speculation on Summer Glau Terminator hello, I'm new to this site; well, relatively new anyways. After reading everyone's posts, I must say everyone put a lot of thought into them, and you all seem to know about robotics. My theory is this, what if she's an earlier model of the t-x, but whose design was based on someone close to John, and built withOUT the liquid metal poly alloy skin; as a way of testing the new model, to see if it's viable for mass production.

Inspired by T3 and the SCC, I have created two tx models for my story: Mothernator, as a way of telling not only Kyle Reese's early days, but also how the t-x could have come about. My first prototype, is the t-x800, a hybrid of the t-x and t800; which has the lighter, yet stronger exoskeletal structure of a t-x; bult modeled after the t800 in terms of overall design. The result is the t-x800, a terminator capable of doing everything it's predecessors can, but was built by the resistance, and not Skynet.

  • Thread RE: Tonight proved that John and Cameron will eventually make love!
"I'm beginning to wonder if Cameron is based on a girl that John is in love with or has feelings for in the future that perhaps was killed. You know how Arnold's T-800 Model 101 was based on a certain human's appearance and speech characterstics? Well, perhaps Cameron is based on a girl in the future that John has feelings for, that maybe was killed in battle, and it was future John's way of honouring her or some sort of coping mechanism."
    Good theory!

Though, the model 101 of the T-800/T-850 in T1, T2 and T3, wasn't based on any human that we know of. If you're refering to the deleated scene in T3, it was deleated because it goes against what Kyle Reese said in T1. That the first human-copied Terminator models were rubberish skinned, and easy to detect; the T-600s. The T-800 model 101 came long after the T-600s. The scene was discarded and isn't considered as canon to the Terminator storyline.
