Novikov's self consistency principle (which is in fact partially derived form Einstein's field equations) clearly states that:
"The only solutions to the laws of physics that can occur locally in the real Universe are those which are globally self-consistent."

This means that, if a person travels back in time and attempts to kill his earlier self, this is a singularity whose probability of existence is zero. One cannot change the past in a way that it affects the future. This is referred to as the "Principle of self consistency". A 1990 paper by Friedmann, Novikov, Thorne, Yurtsever titled
"Cauchy problem in spacetimes with closed timelike curves" can be referred to for further information. The paper can be reached from the following link:
